Portuguese FAST Course

This course is designed to assist students in coping with everyday situations in a Portuguese-speaking country. The cultural orientation of the course is Brazil. The course follows a nine-step approach that includes the following activities: sample dialogs, filling in the blanks, contextual equivalents, additional vocabulary, pronunciation practice, and thought translation.

The 30 lessons cover checking into a hotel, asking directions, answering the phone, being introduced at a party, ordering in a restaurant, buying clothing and shoes at the store, and calling the doctor's office.

Portuguese Programatic Course

You learn easily from the Portuguese Programmatic Course by imitating and repeating the dialogues of natural, everyday conversations recorded on the CDs/MP3 by native speakers. A variety of drills and exercises help you develop fluency while guiding you to the correct intonation and pronunciation. At the end of each lesson unit in Volume 1 is a brief "culture capsule," - recorded in English, that provides insight into the language usage and customs of Brazilian Portuguese. Volume 2 will extend your vocabulary and facility in more complex dialogues.

Portuguese Programmatic Course was prepared by Jack Lee Ulsh, supervisor of Portuguese instruction at the Foreign Service Institute. This first volume contains 25 units of work. volume 2 contains an additional 23 units and completes the course. The Portuguese presented in both volumes is educated speech drawn principally from Brazilian sources but intended to serve the needs of students going to Europe or Africa. The guidance of an instructor will be helpful in making such adaptations as are appropriate for continental or African Portuguese as well as for regional variations within Brazil.
